At 6’11”, 220 pounds, Dover High School alum Rafael Castro stands out in a crowd. But now he’s drawing attention, even when he’s surrounded by young men his own size.
Castro earned national attention when he played power forward for Coach Billie Connors at Dover High School, where he averaged 20.3 points, 16.3 rebounds, 4.7 blocks, 2.2 assists, and 1.5 steals. He initially played at Providence College but transferred to George Washington University, where he is a redshirt junior. The young man, known as “Slim” around his hometown, is having a stellar season, averaging 14 points (on 67 percent shooting), 9.3 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game. He has had more games with double-digits in scoring and rebounds than any player since 1994, when GWU’s Yinka Dare, who eventually played four seasons with the then-New Jersey Nets, set the record.
Now Castro and his Revolutionaries teammates have March Madness. The team used its 20-11 regular-season record to earn the seventh seed in the Atlantic 10 tournament, which is being played at the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC.
They will play their first game against an as-yet-undetermined opponent at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 13. Dover fans can watch the game on CBS Sports Network (DirecTV, channel 221; Dish Network, 158; Optimum, channel 215; Verizon Fios, channel 94; and DirecTV Stream, channel 732).
Catch the game, share your insights, and stay tuned to see if Castro and his teammates can keep winning.
