CLOSURES AND DETOURS ANTICIPATED ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY FOR THE SCHEDULED HOWARD BOULEVARD PROJECT IN MT. ARLINGTON.
(Trenton) – I-80 westbound is scheduled to have lane closures tonight to shift traffic as the Bridges over Howard Boulevard replacement project advances in Mount Arlington, Morris County. In addition, the ramp from I-80 westbound to Howard Boulevard and the Howard Boulevard ramp to I-80 westbound will be closed and detoured tonight at the same time.
I-80 westbound Lane Closures
Beginning at 8:30 p.m. tonight, Friday, June 27, until 8 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, June 28, I-80 westbound is scheduled to have lane closures beginning before the Bridge over Howard Boulevard until near milepost 32. Work will start with a single lane closure, before a second lane is closed. Additionally, construction is expected to begin in the left lane and move to the right as work progresses. At least one lane will be maintained overnight. The closure is necessary to install a construction barrier and restripe the roadway to implement a traffic shift. If work is completed sooner, the lanes will reopen earlier.
By 8 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, June 28, three lanes on I-80 westbound will be restored and shifted to the left onto the temporary roadway in the median. The traffic shift is necessary to demolish and reconstruct the I-80 westbound Bridge over Howard Boulevard and is expected to remain in place until fall 2026.
I-80 westbound-Howard Boulevard Interchange Ramp Closures
Beginning at 8:30 p.m. tonight, Friday, June 27, until 8 a.m. Saturday, June 28, the I-80 westbound Exit 30 ramp to Howard Boulevard and the Howard Boulevard ramp to I-80 westbound will be closed and detoured. The ramp closures are necessary to assist with the traffic shift and improve safety for the work zone on I-80. If work is completed sooner, the ramps will reopen earlier. The following detours will be in place tonight:
I-80 westbound Exit 30 ramp to Howard Boulevard Detour:
Motorists on I-80 westbound wishing to take the Exit 30 ramp to Howard Boulevard/Mount Arlington will be directed to continue on I-80 westbound
Take Exit 27A to Route 206 southbound/Somerville
Go underneath I-80 and stay right to take the first ramp to I-80 eastbound/New York City
Take Exit 30 to Howard Boulevard/Mount Arlington
Howard Boulevard ramp to I-80 westbound Detour:
Motorists on Howard Boulevard wishing to take the ramp to I-80 westbound will be directed to Route 46 westbound
Stay right to continue on Route 46 westbound
Stay right at the Crossroads Gas Station to I-80/Lake Hopatcong/Landing
Stay left to take the ramp to I-80 westbound
The $65.4 million federally funded project will replace the existing bridges carrying I-80 eastbound and I-80 westbound over Howard Boulevard/CR 516, which are in poor condition. Improvements will include raising the vertical clearance of each bridge, widening the shoulders, lengthening acceleration and deceleration lanes on I-80, and widening the ramps to and from Howard Boulevard. The Howard Boulevard intersection will be reconfigured to improve operational performance.
The project will also include upgraded traffic signals and lighting, ADA-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks, and sidewalks extended to the Mount Arlington Train Station for improved pedestrian and bicycle safety and mobility. It is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
